Interesting question: One would normally think that macaroon is the English translation for the French name macaron. But some people have a very strong opinion on this matter and will be very quick to point out that the macaroon is something that looks different and tastes differently, indeed is made differently, from the macaron. Which is true, once you have decided to honour that coconut-based cookie with the name macaroon.
We don't, but that is a matter of personal taste. For us, a macaroon or macaron is made with ground almonds and the recipe is French, or to be more precise, Italian.
Now if you Google the matter, you may even find reference to the coconut-based cookie as the "American macaroon". And this sounds like a good idea to us, because not only does it help us to clearly distinguish the coconut cookie from real macaroons, but it also puts a pretty large ocean between us and the cookie who wants to have the same name as our macaroons - or macarons!
